Purple and Red Sky

 Art by Sandra Irvine

My Story…so far!

Expressive, emotive and energetic is how I describe my art work. I’m passionate about expressing myself on the canvas and strive to convey this to the viewer.

I’m a Scottish artist, based in The Netherlands. I’ve always loved being creative and for the past 10 years or so, have been painting on a regular basis.

Primarily self-taught, with the addition of following a few courses over the years to complement and develop my skills. This included completing three years of a professional fine arts programme.

I feel that I’m continuously evolving as an artist and as a person - forever learning and growing.

To me, art is healing and nurturing for the soul, exploring and expressing your true essence.

My Inspiration

I take my inspiration from experiences  in my environment, mainly nature and human behaviour - colour, shape, texture and light fascinate me. The perpetual motion and sensitivity of life deeply moves me, awakening a creative spark, that needs to be expressed.

Contemporary artists from the Post-Impressionist and Expressionist movements like Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Cezanne, Marc Chagall and Kees van Dongen are an inspiration to me, with their use of bold brushstrokes and strong colour.

To add to the endless list of artists whose work I greatly admire, Alice Neel, Paula Rego and many of my peers inspire me immensely, with their spirited and courageous work.

This is what I strive to convey to my audience, through my chosen medium of acrylic paint, ink, pastel and pen.
